By the late 1920s and during the 1930s, more US serials featured male heroes, such as body-building strong man and stunt double Joe Bonomo, Jack Mulhall, Francis Ford, William Desmond, Franklyn Farnum, and Walter Miller. Four studios, including several independent ones, were responsible for producing most of the serials during the sound era: Mascot, Universal, Columbia, and Republic, while major studios (such as MGM, Fox, Warners, and Paramount) declined to produce sound serials. RKO-Radio's sole sound serial was The Last Frontier (1932).

Boxing pictures (the Rocky series of 1976, 1979, 1982, 1985, and 1990), car racing films (i.e., John Frankenheimer's Grand Prix (1966), the 'Cannonball Run' films (1976, 1981, and 1984), Days of Thunder (1990), Gone in 60 Seconds (2000) and The Fast and the Furious (2001)), aviation dogfight films (Top Gun (1986)), baseball flicks (i.e., Eight Men Out (1988)) and other sports topics have often appeared as subjects in action films.

Film Plot Summary

The film opened in downtown Sydney, Australia, in the Biocyte Pharmaceuticals building, where in the laboratory, Russian molecular biologist Dr. Vladimir Nekhorovich (Rade Serbedzija) had DNA-engineered sample cultures. In a voice-over confession, he described the existence of a "hero" -- a curative green-colored drug known as 'Bellerophon,' and the creation of its opposite, a monstrous villain -- a red-colored super-virus known as 'Chimera.'
